The Song of the Sea / Le chant de la mer
Focus: Listening & imagination
Ocean Message: Every sound carries a story.
Materials: Audio of ocean sounds or Lasirèn ak Labalèn CD track, paper, crayons
Steps:
1. Play ocean sounds or Lasirèn ak Labalèn’s melody from the CD.
2. Ask children to close their eyes and imagine what Lasirèn or Labalèn hears.
3. Draw what they “hear” — waves, shells, or underwater dreams.
DIY Project (20–30 min): Ocean Sound Bottles
• Fill clear bottles with rice, pebbles, and glitter to mimic sea sounds.
• Seal tightly and shake to create your own “song of the sea.”
Reflection: What colors sound like the sea?

Materials: Scarves or ribbons in ocean colors, CD music
Steps:
1. Play “Lasirèn ak Labalèn” rhythm from the CD.
2. Move like waves — soft and strong.
3. Create a group dance inspired by the book’s reunion scene.
DIY Project: Wave Ribbons
• Tape blue ribbons to popsicle sticks.
• Wave them to the beat of the sea, creating your “dance of joy.”
Reflection: How does the ocean move inside you?

Independence & Ancestors’ Day (1–2 Jan)
Morning with Manman Woje / Maten ak Manman Woje
Focus: Family & Responsibility
Story Link: Ti Sonson helps his mother, a machann fritay, prepare food for the local market in Fèmat.
Message: Work done with love feeds the soul.
Project: DIY – Mini Market Stand (20–30 min)
Materials: Cereal box, paper plates, scissors, markers, glue.
Steps:
1. Cut a small stall shape from a cereal box.
2. Decorate it with drawings of bannann fri, griot, and pikliz.
3. Label items in Creole with price tags.
4. Add a “Soup Joumou corner” in honor of Haiti’s Independence Day.
Variation: Create paper money and role-play being vendors and customers.
Eco-tip: Reuse cardboard boxes or food packaging.
Creole Word: Fritay (Fried street food)
Cultural Note: Street vendors (machann yo) embody Haitian independence and creativity, feeding communities through hard work and resilience.

Project: DIY – Kanaval Wrist Streamers
Materials: Ribbon or fabric strips, elastic bands, scissors, glue.
Steps:
1. Tie ribbons to elastic or string to wear on wrists.
2. Dance to Ti Sonson’s drumming rhythm.
3. Move like waves, wind, or drums in Kanaval spirit.
Variation: Decorate with sequins or beads for costumes.
Creole Word: Ritm (Rhythm)
Cultural Note: Haitian Kanaval unites music, art, and laughter — where everyone becomes both
